ILOILO City – Civic groups, church leaders, and youth organizations are gearing up for the September 21 “Trillion Peso March” here, a mass mobilization on the 53rd anniversary of Martial Law aimed at confronting what they describe as entrenched and worsening corruption in government.
Organizers said the march is not merely symbolic but a direct call for accountability, stressing that billions allegedly lost to anomalous flood control projects, confidential funds, and political dynasties must be returned to the people.
“If we could focus our budget on education and food, the situation would improve dramatically. Our anger is justified; we want accountability, not just legal consequences,” said Monsignor Meliton Oso of the Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center.
Oso underscored the gravity of corruption, pointing out that 14.4 million Filipino families suffer from hunger and poverty while public funds are siphoned off. He insisted the action will be peaceful but firm.
“We don’t want to follow the path of Nepal. We assure you that our actions will be non-violent… Our message is loud and clear: we will express our righteous anger regarding rampant corruption. The squandered funds represent the labor and sacrifices of our fellow Filipinos,” stressed Oso.
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Panay’s secretary general Elmer Forro said the protest is meant to expose “long-standing corruption secrets” and demand accountability from both the Marcos and Duterte administrations.
“Manabat ang dapat manabat,” he declared, citing unresolved controversies such as Vice President Sara Duterte’s confidential funds.
Youth groups are also taking a central role. “From Marcos Sr. to Marcos Jr., corruption remains entrenched in our system. Our rally on September 21 serves as a crucial reminder of the decisive role the Filipino people play in demanding change,” said Matt Gonzaga, spokesperson for Pamatan-on Kontra Korapsyon.
Church leaders like Monsignor Marco Sulayao of the Promotion of Church Peoples’ Response warned that corruption will persist as long as political dynasties dominate governance.
“Mintras nga padayon ang political dynasty, padayon ang corruption,” Sulayao said.
For Kahublagan Kontra Korapsyon spokesperson Dr. Kristin Treñas, the march is only the beginning. “This is not a one rally, this is a series of mobilizations. Kita tanan ang boss, indi ang mga politiko. We must continue to watch them,” she said.
The “Trillion March” will start at 3 p.m. from Jaro Plaza to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol, capped by speeches, educational activities, and a solidarity concert featuring Ilonggo musicians.
Organizers expect over 3,000 participants from diverse sectors and are urging attendees to wear white as a symbol of peace and unity./PN
