ILOILO City – The regional Gawad Saka 2017 Search for Outstanding Filipino Farmers and Fisherfolk will honor nine awardees today at Casa Real de Iloilo.
The honorees are as follows:
* Melvin E. Caporal, outstanding sugarcane farmer
* Engr. Eddie P. Cañuto, outstanding high-value crops farmer
* Azucena S. Segador, outstanding coconut farmer
* Dexter N. Miague, outstanding corn farmer
* Mr. and Ms. Julio Nieles and Family, outstanding farm family
* Ereberto E. Jucaban, outstanding integrated rice farmer
The awarding ceremony starts at 9 a.m., said Juvy Gaton, information officer of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 6.
This year’s regional awardees in the institutional categories are the following:
* Municipal Agriculture and Fishery Council (MAFC) of Valladolid, Negros Occidental
* Provincial Agriculture and Fishery Council (PAFC) of Aklan
* Lezo Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Lezo, Aklan
DA regional executive director Remelyn R. Recoter invites other farmers, fisherfolk and organized groups in Western Visayas to vie for 23 categories in the Gawad Saka search.
Gaton said P30,000 cash and a trophy will be received by individual winners.
Winning organizations, on the other hand, will each get P50,000 and trophy. Their assisting agricultural extension workers will also be given P15,000 each as incentive.
Gawad Saka is an annual undertaking of the DA to give due recognition and pay tribute to dedicated individuals and institutions whose exemplary and significant contributions to the country’s agricultural development are deemed worthy of emulation./PN
