ILOILO City – A total of 1,413,246 registered voters in this city and Iloilo province are expected to cast their ballots in the May 14 barangay election.

According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) provincial officer Elizabeth Doronila, there are also 486,261 combined qualified registered voters for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.

The barangay and SK elections will be synchronized.

Doronila urged voters to check their precinct assignments this early to avoid confusion and delays on election day.

“Drop by your local election office and ask which precinct have you been designated,” said Doronila.

Iloilo City has 274,789 registered barangay voters while Iloilo province has 1,138,457.

In the SK election, Iloilo City has 87,003 registered youth voters while Iloilo province has 399,258.

Unlike the automated 2016 national and local elections, the barangay and SK polls will be manual.

Doronila said Comelec planned to establish special voting lanes exclusive for persons with disabilities, senior citizens and pregnant women.

Iloilo City has 840 clustered precincts while Iloilo province has 3,914.

Comelec will be accepting certificates of candidacy between April 14 and April 20.

The campaign period is from May 2 to May 12.

Iloilo City has 180 barangays while Iloilo province has 1,721.

Ilonggo senator Franklin Drilon exposed early this week that allies of President Rodrigo Duterte in Congress wanted to postpone the barangay and SK polls to give way to the Charter Change plebiscite this October.

Drilon said such move would give the President’s allies “time to railroad the proposed Charter Change which would include provisions for a term extension.”

Malacañang, however, denied this. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Drilon’s statements were “very speculative.”

“While there is a pending bill in the House to suspend anew the barangay elections, Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III declared there was no support in the Senate for another postponement of the barangay elections. That means, as far as Congress is concerned, the barangay election will push through,” said Roque./PN
