ILOILO – Pesticides containing a hazardous banned chemical were confiscated in Barangay Bantud, Dumangas, Iloilo around 12:30 p.m. yesterday.
The pesticides, worth P1.8 million, were seized from 71-year-old Pablo Demaisip Jr., a resident of Barangay Tarong, Carles, Iloilo.
In a multi-agency entrapment operation led by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Iloilo, Demaisip was arrested after selling a kilo of Bristan power pesticide to a poseur buyer for P6,500.
According to Inspector Pedro Celino, CIDG-Iloilo chief, his men were able to recover a total of 277 packs of the pesticide from Demaisip.
Each pack weighed a kilo and Demaisip would sell them to clients for P6,800 each, said Celino.
“We have been monitoring him since April this year,” Celino told Panay News.
Prior to yesterday’s entrapment, a test buy was conducted and the purchased item was forwarded to the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) in Metro Manila for analysis.
“The pesticide contained a component ban in the country,” said Celino.
He said it had “organotin pesticide…looks like skim milk” but harmful to humans.
On Sept. 21, said Celino, CIDG-Iloilo monitored the arrival of some P1.5-million worth of pesticides and that same day, some 200 kilos were disposed.
“Dugay ‘ya na ‘ni nga business. Naga–abot lang sa ila balay. Kon kaisa ginakuha ‘ya sa pier sa Dumangas,” added Celino.
Demaisip was detained at the CIDG-Iloilo detention facility.
He faces a charge for violation of Presidential Decree 1144 that created FPA to regulate pesticides.
The Decree defines pesticide as “any substance or product, or mixture thereof, including active ingredients, adjuvants and pesticide formulations, intended to control, prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate directly of indirectly, any pest. The term shall be understood to include insecticide, fungicide, bactericide, nematocide, herbicide, molluscicide, avicide, rodenticide, plant regulator, defoliant, desiccant and the like.”
Backing up CIDG-Iloilo in the entrapment were the Guimaras police, Maritime Police, Department of Trade and Industry, FPA, and Dumangas police station./PN
