BORACAY – The local government of Malay will buy P3.3 million worth of equipment to enhance its emergency response capability, especially in this island.
The money will come from the trust fund of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).
Some P1.8 million will be used to buy three outbound engine speed boats to be used as water ambulance and Bantay Dagat patrol boats.
Water ambulances are needed to immediate transfer patients to mainland hospitals, said Municipal Councilor Jupiter Gallenero.
While it was opened for public use in February, the island hospital remains under construction and caters only to outpatients. Those who need further treatment are transferred to mainland Malay.
The remaining P1.5 million will be used to build 12 lifeguard towers at the Bulabog, Puka, Ilig-iligan, and Tambisaan beaches.
Gallenero said these structures aim to help prevent drowning incidents.
Currently the nine MDRRMO lifeguards are stationed only along the 4-kilometer beachfront.
The MDDRRMO also plans to hire more lifeguards in preparation for the influx of tourists this summer. (PNA)
