CAPIZ — A P57-million regional evacuation center in Barangay Poblacion Ilaya, Dumarao town officially opened on January 21, providing residents with a safe and comfortable facility during disasters and emergencies.
The evacuation center covers an area of approximately 1,300 square meters and can accommodate more than 1,000 individuals during evacuation. It is equipped with essential facilities, including kitchens, restrooms, and a stage, among other amenities.
Designed as a multi-purpose structure, the center is intended not only for disaster response but also for community activities such as meetings, gatherings, sports events, and other public functions.
The project was implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) under the leadership of Assistant Regional Director Ricardo Gutierrez, with support from Atty. Grace Hachuela of the DPWH Legal Division and Engr. Gerry Parra of the Capiz 2nd District Engineering Office.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by provincial officials and members of the Dumarao local government unit (LGU), including Sangguniang Bayan members, village captains, and barangay councilors.
Officials highlighted the collaborative efforts of national agencies and the local government in strengthening Dumarao’s disaster preparedness and community resilience, ensuring residents have a safe space during emergencies.
According to the DPWH and the Dumarao LGU, the project is expected to significantly improve emergency response and preparedness while providing evacuees with comfort, safety, and privacy./PN
