MANILA — From the qualifying round all the way to the top of the podium, Sofia Pagara and Khy Progella completed a stunning title run by toppling veteran Alas Pilipinas teammates Cherry Rondina and Bernadeth Pons, 21-18, 21-13, to capture the Beach Pro Tour Futures gold medal in Busan, South Korea.
Pagara and Progella capped their unlikely championship charge with a straight-set victory in an all-Filipino final, turning a competitive opening frame into a commanding finish as they pulled away from Rondina and Pons in the second set.
The triumph completed a remarkable qualifier-to-champion journey for Pagara and Progella and secured a 1-2 finish for the Philippines, with Rondina and Pons taking the silver medal.
Pagara and Progella had to battle their way into the championship match, recovering from a first-set setback against Japan in the semifinals before prevailing, 17-21, 21-13, 15-11.
Rondina and Pons, meanwhile, punched their ticket to the all-Filipino finale with a hard-earned 23-21, 21-19 sweep of Australia in the other semifinal.
Pagara and Progella’s road to gold began in the qualifying round before they earned their place in the main draw. They then won twice in Pool D to finish on top of their group and advance to the quarterfinals.
Their sustained run eventually set up the showdown with Rondina and Pons, one of the country’s most established beach volleyball tandems.
Australia completed the podium after defeating Japan, 21-15, 20-22, 15-8, in the bronze-medal match.
The strong showing in Busan provides a significant boost to the Philippines’ preparations for the 2026 Asian Games while strengthening the country’s long-term push for a breakthrough berth in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The Asian Games remains an important competitive target for the national beach volleyball program, while Olympic qualification will be pursued through designated continental events, the 2027 World Championships, the Olympic Ranking and the Olympic Q-Series.
With Pagara and Progella emerging as another competitive tandem alongside Rondina and Pons, the Philippines has strengthened its pool of contenders as it pursues its first Olympic berth in beach volleyball./PN
