MANILA – The Malacañang on Wednesday said that it is not happy about the Philippine National Police (PNP) data showing that cases of killings have increased by 51 percent during the first five months of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“I think we should be happy for the fact that crime rate went down. And that it seems by all indications that those crime rates, crime rate that went down were actually drug-related cases,” Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said at a news briefing in Malacañang.
“We’re not happy about deaths at all. We’re not happy about deaths, no death of – as the President said, the death of any Filipino is not anything to be celebrated. However it’s, it’s very heartening and very encouraging to realize that, to be able to identify the fact that much of the crime is actually drug-related,” he added.
According to the PNP’s Crime Research and Analysis Center of the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management, the index crime went down to 55,391 cases from July to November this year, lower than the 81,064 cases during the same period last year.
The same data, which was released by the Presidential Communications Office, showed murder cases went up between July and November to 5,970 cases. There were only 3,950 cases of murder during the same time period in 2015. (GMA News)
