MANILA – Department of Justice (DOJ) secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla was chosen by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as the new Ombudsman.

Remulla’s appointment came just a day after the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) submitted the possible applicants for the post vacated by retired Ombudsman Samuel Martires.

β€œThe administration remains firm in its commitment to fight corruption wherever it exists. As Ombudsman, Remulla is expected to uphold transparency, strengthen anti-corruption measures, and ensure that justice is administered fairly and efficiently,” the Palace said.

It added: “There will be no sacred cows, no exemptions, and no excuses. Public office is a public trust, and those who betray it will be held accountable.”

Aside from Remulla, other shortlisted for the post were Anna Liza Logan, Michael Frederick Musngi, Michael Aguinaldo, Samuel Gaerlan, Mario Lopez, and Stephen Cruz.

Remulla and six other applicants were shortlisted for the Ombudsman post, as stated in a JBC letter addressed to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. was signed by Acting Chief Justice Marvic Leonen.

Retired SC Associate Justice Jose Mendoza, a member of the JBC who created the shortlist, earlier said that Remulla was included to the list of Ombudsman nominees after securing a clearance from his cases.

“In the case of Secretary Remulla, he was able to submit clearances from the Ombudsman,” Mendoza said when asked by Sen. Imee Marcos during Commission on Appointments (CA) Committee on Justice & Judicial and Bar Council hearing on Tuesday./PN
