MANILA – Allegations of corruption prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to fire Dionisio Santiago as Dangerous Drugs Board chairman, Malacañang said yesterday.
Santiago tendered his irrevocable resignation on Nov. 7 on Duterte’s order in light of his comment that the mega drug rehabilitation facility in Nueva Ecija was a “mistake.”
“I would like to confirm that General Santiago was let go by the President not only because of his statements on the mega rehab center being a mistake,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque told a press briefing.
“He (Santiago) was also let go because of complaints that [he] was using taxpayers’ money for junkets abroad,” said Roque.
According to the Palace official, they received a complaint alleging that Santiago brought family members and six “closest” personnel with him on trips to Austria and the United States.
“There were also complaints that General Santiago may have accepted consideration from major drug players,” Roque said.
The former DDB chairman was also accused of receiving a house from the late Ozamiz City mayor Reynaldo Parojinog.
In July Parojinog – whom Duterte tagged as a narco-politician – was killed along with six others in a series of drug raids.
“That’s a complaint on file with the Office of the President. It was by the union of PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency),” Roque said./PN
