ILOILO City – President Rodrigo Duterte declared this day, Aug. 25, a special non-working day in this city.
To keep the city’s 80th Charter Day anniversary peaceful today, the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) is imposing a citywide gun ban.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Iloilo be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” read part of Malacañang’s Proclamation No. 253.
Except for law enforcers – policemen and members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines – on duty, no one is allowed to carry firearms outside of their residences, said Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, city police spokesperson.
The permit to carry firearms outside of residence (PTC FOR) was suspended last night. The gun ban would end midnight today.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, meanwhile, urged Ilonggos: “Let us work for the advancement of Iloilo City and the transformation of the Philippines by forging a lasting partnership in our quest for prosperity for all, law and order, and peace.”
On the other hand, Secretary Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications and Operations Office hailed the “strong devotion of the Ilonggos to the development of Iloilo City” as a “good example of the unity we need to attain socieconomic progress.”
According to Andanar, the Charter Day celebration should showcase “not only the best of what Iloilo City has to offer in terms of its products, customs, and traditions, but also the warmth and the willingness of the Ilonggos to support the government in our vision of a comfortable life for all.”
He called for a “stronger partnership” in the quest to rid society of illegal drugs, crime and corruption.
“Let us join hands and rally behind the Duterte administration in the implementation of genuine reforms for the good of our people,” according to Andanar.
Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, Philippine National Police chief, approved today’s gun ban, said Sangrines.
Even police and military intelligence personnel are not allowed to carry their guns unless they have mission orders, she added./PN
