AS THE GOLDEN hues of sunset gave way to twilight on December 16, 2024, Iloilo City burst into life with the beats of drums and vibrant tribal dances, marking the ceremonial beginning of the Dinagyang season. The annual “Pamukaw”, steeped in tradition, unfolded in front of the historic San Jose de Placer Parish, setting the stage for the grand Iloilo Dinagyang Festival 2025.

Spectators gathered early to witness captivating performances by eight competing tribes: Tribu Paghidaet, Tribu Salognon, Tribu Parianon, Tribu Ilonganon, Tribu Pag-asa Kang Mandurriao, Tribu Hangaway, Tribu Molave, and Tribu Pan-ay. Clad in elaborate costumes adorned with feathers, beads, and fiery hues, each tribe performed synchronized dances that narrated the rich cultural heritage and enduring faith of the Ilonggo people, all in honor of Señor Santo Niño.

Awakening the spirit
Before dawn broke, the rumble of drums stirred the Ilonggo community, heralding the season of joy and devotion. Pamukaw, a call to awaken, embodies the spirit of Dinagyang, inviting the world to witness Iloilo’s grandest celebration in January 2025.
Led by Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI) chairperson Rito Carlos “Judgee” Peña, the ceremony featured a declaration of the Dinagyang season’s opening. Joining him were Rev. Fr. Nelson G. Zerda, OSA, Parish Priest of San Jose de Placer; IFFI Executive Director Joyce Clavecillas; and Dinagyang Festival Artistic Director Eric Divinagracia. Adding flair to the event, ILOmination’s Sidlangan Dance Company delivered a prelude performance, followed by previews from the eight competing tribes.
Each contingent — representing schools and districts across Iloilo City — hinted at the grand competition awaiting in January. From the energetic Tribu Paghidaet of La Paz National High School to the powerful Tribu Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School, the tribes promised a fierce yet awe-inspiring contest.
A theme of faith and resilience

Guided by the theme, “Buhi nga Pagtuo sa Kinabuhi sang mga Ilonggo” (Living Faith in the Lives of the Ilonggos), Dinagyang 2025 emphasizes the values of faith, valor, strength, creativity, wisdom, devotion, and growth. These principles highlight how the Ilonggos’ steadfast faith has shaped Iloilo City’s thriving identity.
Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed pride in the event, saying, “Pamukaw is not just a celebration — it’s a reminder of who we are as Ilonggos. It’s a time to reflect on our faith and unity, and it brings out the best in our community.”
Uniting community and culture
The streets buzzed with excitement as locals and tourists alike cheered for the performances. “The energy is electrifying,” shared Jenny, a visitor from Manila. “I’ve attended other festivals, but there’s something uniquely heartfelt about Dinagyang — it connects you to the soul of the people.”

Adding to the celebration were food stalls serving Ilonggo delicacies, cultural exhibits showcasing local artistry, and businesses hosting festive activities, all contributing to Iloilo’s cultural vibrancy.
A grand prelude to Dinagyang 2025

As Pamukaw concluded, it left an indelible impression, signaling the splendor awaiting in Dinagyang 2025. With a mix of street dance competitions, religious processions, and cultural parades, this year’s festivities promise to elevate Iloilo’s legacy. The IFFI, tasked with organizing the event, aims to deliver a world-class celebration that cements Dinagyang’s reputation on both national and global stages.
Awakening Iloilo’s legacy

For Mayor Treñas and the Ilonggos, Pamukaw represents resilience, identity, and unwavering faith. As the night’s final drumbeats echoed, one message was clear: Iloilo City is ready to awaken the world to its unparalleled devotion, rich traditions, and infectious energy.
