AT 35 YEARS OLD, Steve Magbanua has become a key figure in the Dinagyang Festival, one of Iloilo City’s most anticipated cultural celebrations.
As the costume designer for Tribu Ilonganon, Steve brings a creative vision that continues to captivate audiences, blending tradition and innovation into breathtaking masterpieces that embody the festival’s dynamic spirit.
“I’ve been designing for Dinagyang for several years now,” Steve shares. “What keeps me inspired is the vibrant energy of Dinagyang and the rich cultural heritage of Iloilo, which continues to evolve every year.”
A passion rooted in culture

Steve’s journey into costume design began with his deep passion for art and Iloilo’s vibrant culture.
Over the years, he has refined his craft, creating designs that not only stand out for their visual appeal but also honor the city’s rich history.
“This year, my inspiration comes from the concept developed by our artistic team and choreographers,” Steve explains.
“I added my own artistic touch to bring their vision to life.”
His 2025 designs reflect a seamless blend of creativity and authenticity, rooted in the traditional beliefs and practices of Iloilo’s cultural heritage.
Tradition meets innovation
Steve’s designs are a testament to his ability to marry tradition with modern artistry. “I strive to innovate with a blend of classic elegance, modern techniques, and unique artistry,” he says. “At the same time, I make sure my designs reflect the festival’s values and stories. It’s all about balancing tradition with creativity.”
However, the process of bringing these intricate designs to life is not without its challenges.
Meeting the high expectations of choreographers, managing limited budgets, and facing delays in acquiring materials are just some of the hurdles Steve must overcome each year.
“The biggest challenge is ensuring everything comes together perfectly, especially when performance dates are near,” he shares.
Collaborating for excellence
Collaboration is central to Steve’s creative process. By working closely with choreographers from the very beginning, he ensures his designs complement and enhance the performers’ movements.
“I turn their concepts into sketches and prototypes,” Steve explains. “I design costumes that are lightweight, flexible, and durable, allowing performers to move freely and execute their choreography without restriction.”
The results speak for themselves — costumes that not only portray vibrant characters but also captivate audiences with their stunning visual impact.

“Costumes are not just about visual appeal,” Steve emphasizes. “They tell a story, captivate the audience, and make their experience unforgettable.”
A lasting legacy
Through his designs, Steve hopes to leave a lasting impression on those who witness the Dinagyang Festival.

“I hope people gain a deeper appreciation for Iloilo’s culture and history,” he says. “I want them to see the beauty of our traditions and the creativity of our people, while feeling inspired and connected to the spirit of Dinagyang.”
As the 2025 Dinagyang Festival approaches, Steve’s work continues to remind us that tradition and creativity can coexist in powerful harmony.
His dedication to preserving and celebrating Iloilo’s heritage through his art ensures that the festival remains a vibrant reflection of the city’s soul — a timeless celebration of culture, passion, and pride./PN
