ILOILO — Construction of what is touted to be the largest sports complex on Panay Island – with a budget of P350 million – is set to begin next month.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) – Victorino Salcedo Campus sports complex in Sara town was conducted on Saturday, April 27.

The first phase will see the construction of a football court, track and field, and a stadium, according to Engr. De Robert Palmera, officer-in-charge of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6’s Iloilo 3rd Engineering District.

This initial phase of the project involves P100 million allocated from the 2024 General Appropriations Act.

Following the completion of Phase 1, DPWH plans to immediately commence Phase II within the year, which includes an allocated budget of P150 million.

By 2025, an additional P100 million is targeted to finalize the facilities, adding an Olympic-size swimming pool, covered gymnasium, basketball court, volleyball court, and lawn tennis court.

The sports complex will also feature a dormitory, recreational area, and canteen to serve as accommodation for athletes during sports events.

DPWH aims to complete the complex within two years.

The bidding process for a qualified contractor to undertake the construction is currently underway.

The sports complex is also seen as a measure to help the 11 local government units (LGUs) of Northern Iloilo save on costs during events like the Congressional Meet, as it will enable the hosting of large gatherings.

NISU president Dr. Bobby Gerardo emphasized the significance of the complex in promoting sports programs in the region.

Meanwhile, Cong. Raul “Boboy” Tupas expressed his elation now that funding has been given for the construction of the sports complex, which he said he has long since proposed.

Tupas hopes that through the sports complex, the potential of youth in Northern Iloilo in sports, particularly in athletics, will be highlighted.
