BACOLOD City – Flash floods hit several areas in this city on Thursday afternoon, stranding passengers and worsening traffic congestion, the local disaster management office said.

Southwest monsoon rains caused floods as high as a meter in Barangay Tangub and knee-deep in other areas, a report from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) stated.

The flash floods were at their deepest at around 3 p.m. and subsided by around 6:30 p.m., said Executive Assistant Joemarie Vargas, cluster head of the CDRRMO.

Many passengers were stranded along streets, Vargas said.

Other flooded areas, according to the CDRRMO, include:

* barangays 16, 21, 10, 11, 35, 4, and 8

* Magsaysay flyover area

* Education and Training Center School campus

* Araneta highway

* Bacolod Adventist Medical Center, Barangay Taculing

* Banggâ Patyo (corner Lopez Jaena-Burgos)

* Tay Tung High School

* City Health Office compound

* BDO Lacson

* Libertad market

* Lupit, 12th and 6th Lacson streets

* Lopue’s East

* Burgos market

* Bacolod City Government Center/circumferential road

The creek in Barangay 11 overflowed but residents along it refused to evacuate, Vargas said. CDRRMO personnel will forcibly evacuate the locals if the water level rises again, he added.

As of this writing the rains already stopped but the CDRRMO said they will continue to monitor the situation across the city in the next 24 hours./PN
