BACOLOD City – Pay your fines as soon as possible to avoid charges.
This is the advice of the Bacolod Anti-Smoking Task Force to smoking ban violators.
As of Sept. 22, the task force already apprehended 250 persons and 40 establishments since its strict implementation of City Ordinance (CO) No. 641 early this month.
Councilor Caesar Distrito, vice chairman of the anti-smoking task force, said they usually caught violators in public places, like, among others, the plaza and downtown area.
Business establishments were also fined for not putting up designated smoking areas and warning signs, Distrito added.
“They (violators) were issued citation tickets. They were given five days to pay their fines at the authorized collection outlets of the City Treasurer’s Office,” said Distrito.
The councilor said the number of apprehended violators is a manifestation of the active enforcement of the smoking ban.
CO No. 641, or the Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance, regulates smoking in public places and conveyances, and the advertisement, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products.
Under the ordinance, violators shall be fined P500 for first offense, P1,000 for second offense, and for third offense, P2,500 and/or a 30-day imprisonment based on court’s discretion.
Business permits of violating establishments shall also be cancelled, it further stated.
The smoking ban will also be implemented during the MassKara festival from Oct. 1 to 22./PN
