MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. assured full government assistance to the family of the first Filipino confirmed killed in the escalating Middle East conflict, identifying the victim as a caregiver from Pangasinan who died while trying to reach safety amid an Iranian missile attack in Israel.
In a video statement, Marcos confirmed that the victim was Mary Anne Velazquez de Vera.
According to information relayed to Philippine authorities, De Vera was helping her elderly ward reach a bomb shelter when the attack occurred before they could reach safety.
Her identity was later confirmed by her husband, who is also employed in Israel.
The President assured that the Philippine government would provide comprehensive support to the bereaved family as they cope with the tragedy.
“Lahat po ng tulong na kakailanganin ng kanilang pamilya ay ihahatid ng ating pamahalaan,” he assured.
Marcos emphasized that government agencies are prepared to extend necessary aid, including financial assistance, repatriation support if needed, and other welfare services to the victim’s relatives.
He added that authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the situation of Filipinos across the region, where tensions have sharply intensified in recent days.
Philippine embassies and labor offices have been placed on heightened alert to ensure the safety and welfare of overseas Filipino workers.
The latest developments come after the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation targeting Iran, which Washington said was intended to weaken Tehran’s military capabilities and address concerns over its nuclear program.
Iran responded by launching drones and missiles toward Israel and targeting US military installations in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar, escalating instability in a region that hosts millions of foreign workers, including a significant number of Filipinos.
Despite the growing uncertainty, Marcos reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting Filipino nationals abroad and ensuring immediate assistance for those affected by the conflict./PN
