MANILA – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) filed on Tuesday charges against former commissioner Nicanor Faeldon and 11 Bureau of Customs officials in connection with the P6.4 billion worth of shabu smuggled from China.
In a 23-page complaint filed at the Department of Justice, the PDEA accused the respondents of conspiring to import prohibited drugs and protecting drug traffickers.
They were charged with violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act and obstruction of justice for “harboring or concealing, or facilitating the escape” of those behind the shabu shipment.
Authorities seized the drug shipment in a Hongfei Logistics, Inc. warehouse in Valenzuela City on May 23. The shipment entered the Philippines through the Customs’ “express lane” at the Manila port on May 17.
Aside from Faeldon, the respondents included directors Milo Maestrecampo and Neil Anthony Estrella, intelligence officers Joel Pinawin and Oliver Valiente, Manila International Container Port district collector Vincent Phillip Maronilla, lawyer Jeline Maree Magsuci, and employees Alexandra Ventura, Randolph Cabansag, Dennis Maniego, Dennis Cabildo, and John Edillor.
Charges of importation of illegal drugs were also filed against Chen Ju Long, owner of Hongfei Logistics, Inc.; Manny Li; Kenneth Dong; Mark Taguba II; Teejay Marcellana; Eirene May Tatad; Emily Dee; Chen I-Min; Jhu Ming Jyun; and Chen Rong Juan.
“The incompetence and corruption effectively shielded and facilitated the escape of Chen Ju Long, and prevented his immediate arrest and prospective prosecution for the importation of the 602.279 kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride,” or shabu, stated the complaint.
The PDEA also ordered the indictment of Hongfei Logistics officers Genelita Arayan, Dennis Nocom, Zhang Hong, Rene Palle, Richard Rebistual, and Mary Rose de la Cruz.
“Accordingly, the respondents should equally bear the burden and be accountable for the importation and bringing into the Philippines of the 602.279 kilograms of shabu,” the agency added.
Earlier the National Bureau of Investigation slapped a complaint for drug smuggling against the importers and brokers of the smuggled shabu./PN
