MANILA – The Petron Tri-Activ Spikers got back on the winning track in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix following a 25-22, 25-19, 25-10 win over the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers on Thursday night at the San Juan Arena.
American reinforcement Stephanie Niemer led the way with 21 points, on 12 attacks and nine service aces, for the Tri-Activ Spikers, which solidified its hold on the second highest spot with a 5-1 win-loss slate.
Serena Warner chipped in 11 markers, while Ilongga Aiza Maizo-Pontilla and Frances Molina combined 14 points for the Tri-Activ Spikers, which recovered from a 25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 19-25, 15-13 loss to the Foton Tornadoes on Tuesday.
“The ball distribution was great and our game plan was well-executed,” said Tri-Activ Spikers head coach Ceseal Delos Santos. “I didn’t expect that it would be easy. Knowing F2 (Logistics), it will not go down easily. So it’s really a great win for us.”
After a slow start in the match, the Tri-Activ Spikers seized the lead at 17-11 behind consecutive points by Niemer. The Cargo Movers tried to erase a 23-17 deficit but the Tri-Activ Spikers got some late conversions from Niemer to close the set.
From a tight start in the second frame, the Tri-Activ Spikers pulled away behind consecutive service aces by Niemer. They later built a 2-0 set win with late hits from Maizo-Pontillas and Warner.
The Tri-Activ Spikers opened the third frame with a 15-7 lead behind Niemer and Maizo-Pontillas. The edge later grew to 22-9 on errors by the Cargo Movers. Back-to-back hits by Warner ended the match.
Reinforcements Sydney Kemper and Hayley Spelman, meanwhile, failed to lift the Cargo Movers to its fourth straight win after being limited to just eight and six markers, respectively.
In the other match, the RC Cola-Army Lady Troopers snapped its three-game losing skid with a 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24 win over the Generika Life Savers. Kierra Holst led the way for the Lady Troopers with 21 points./PN
