MANILA — The Philippine women’s national football team secured a historic return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a dominant 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026 play-in match on Thursday at Cbus Super Stadium in Gold Coast.
Veterans Angela Beard and Jacklyn Sawicki struck early in the second half to power the Filipinas to their second World Cup appearance, building on their breakthrough debut in 2023 and underscoring their continued rise in Asian football.
After a tightly contested and scoreless opening half, the Filipinas wasted no time asserting control after the restart. Beard broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, converting a long cross from the left by Jael Guy.
Five minutes later, Sawicki doubled the advantage for the Mark Toscano-mentored side, connecting on another delivery from Guy before firing a volley past a defender in the 52nd minute.
The Philippines had already shown attacking intent late in the first half, including a 38th-minute sequence when Guy attempted to set up Beard, only to be denied by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Maftuna Jonimqulova.
Despite Uzbekistan enjoying a slight edge in possession at 56 percent, the Filipinas were far more clinical, finishing with 14 total shots, eight on target, compared to their opponents’ six attempts and two on goal.
The Philippine defense also stood firm, limiting Uzbekistan’s chances while committing just four fouls against the opposition’s 10, highlighting a disciplined and organized performance on both ends.
The victory marked a significant breakthrough for the Filipinas, who had lost three of their previous four meetings against Uzbekistan since 1997. The two sides last settled for a 2-2 draw in a friendly match at Rizal Memorial Stadium in October.
With the win, the Philippines secured one of the final slots in the expanded 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, joining qualifiers Japan, Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, and South Korea.
