MANILA – Filipino javelin thrower Danilo Fresnido claimed the country’s first gold in the 22nd World Masters Athletics Championships after ruling the men’s 40-44 javelin throw competition at Perth, Australia.
The Sorsogon, Bicol-native Fresnido, who is also the current head coach of the national team, displayed his fine form as he heaved the spear to a distance of 62.30 meters to outshine seven other rivals.
Finishing behind Fresnido is Harri Leivonen of Finland, who submitted 54.92 meters, while settling for a bronze medal finish is Indian Ved Prakash Singh with his 52.38 meter throw.
It was sweet redemption for the 44-year-old Fresnido, a former Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, after managing just a runner-up finish in the same event during the 2015 edition in Lyon, France.
Aside from Fresnido, other Filipino athletes who will compete in the tournament are Erlinda Lavandia for javelin throw, pole vaulter Emerson Obiena, marathoner Lorna Vejano, and Negrense long jumper Marestella Torres-Sunang.
This marks the first time that the Negros Oriental-native Torres-Sunang is joining the competition. She will begin her campaign on Nov. 5, while Obiena and Vejano will compete later this week./PN
