MANILA — The Philippine Men’s National Football Team reignited its 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 comeback victory over host Laos, securing its first win and first three points of the tournament over the weekend at the New Laos National Stadium in Vientiane.
After a disappointing opening-match defeat to Myanmar, the Filipinos displayed resilience by erasing an early deficit and unleashing four unanswered goals in the second half, reviving their hopes of advancing in the regional competition.
Laos grabbed the early advantage after Damoth Thongkhamsavath beat Philippine goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad to put the hosts ahead, 1-0.
The Philippines, however, took control after the break.
John Lucero sparked the turnaround in the 47th minute, converting a pass from Scott Woods inside the penalty area to level the match at 1-1.
Just five minutes later, the Filipinos seized the lead after Javier Marona’s dangerous cross forced Laos defender Viengxay Sidavong into an own goal.
Jarvey Gayoso widened the cushion in the 60th minute after calmly converting a penalty kick, while veteran defender Daisuke Sato put the result beyond doubt with an 88th-minute strike to complete the emphatic 4-1 triumph.
The convincing victory restored momentum for the Philippine side following its 4-1 opening loss to Myanmar and served as a major confidence boost heading into a crucial showdown against regional powerhouse Thailand on Tuesday at New Clark City./PN
