MANILA – Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo missed an opportunity to inch closer to league leader Ceres-Negros FC after settling for a scoreless draw with Mendiola FC 1991 in the 2019 Philippines Football League at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa, Batangas.

With the outcome, Kaya Iloilo remained at second place in the standings with 44 points on 14 wins, two draws and three losses, while Mendiola 1991 had 17 points on four wins, five draws and 10 losses.

Mendiola was trimmed down to 10 men as early as the 12th minute on Wednesday after one of its player was slapped with a red card for bringing down Jordan Mintah who was attempting for a close range conversion.

Darryl Roberts, however, could not take advantage of the penalty kick. His attempt just hit the crossbar.

Kaya-Iloilo became aggressive but struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities for a 0-0 halftime score.

Kaya-Iloilo continued to attack Mendiola 1991 in the second half with Ilonggo Jovin Bedic and Mintah having opportunities but could not penetrate on their opponent’s defense.

In the 83rd minute, the ball fell kindly to Mintah in the box, but his effort went straight to the keeper. Then, he was through on goal after a lovely ball from Bedic but could only drag his shot wide.

The two football clubs face off again in a week’s time in the same venue./PN
