MANILA – Filipino bowlers ended the country’s nearly two-decade title drought in the World Bowling Youth Championships after taking home a bronze medal in the 2018 edition in Michigan, USA.

Asian Games-bound Kenzo Umali and Merwin Tan alongside men’s team teammates Ivan Malig and Praise Gahol captured on Friday the Philippines’ first medal in the tournament in 26 years.

They lost to eventual champion Qatar in the three-game semifinals 539-588 after finishing the two-block eliminations on second overall.

Qatar won by beating Finland 473-437 in the finals. The latter downed Japan in the other semifinal match.

“Our bronze medal serves as a morale boost for Kenzo and Merwin in their campaign in the Asian Games,” head coach Biboy Rivera told Sports Radio 918.

Prior to the bronze medal this year, the Philippines won two gold medals in the 1992 World’s in Caracas, Venezuela courtesy of Angelo Constantino in singles and the Angel Constantino-Noberito Constantino pair in doubles./PN
