MANILA — The Philippines is set for its biggest year yet on the Women’s Tennis Association calendar in 2027 after securing hosting rights for two international tournaments, including a higher-tier WTA 250 event later in the year.

The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) confirmed that the country will stage the WTA 250 tournament in late October or early November, adding it to the Philippine Women’s Open, a WTA 125 event scheduled in January.

The two tournaments will give the Philippines an expanded presence on the WTA calendar and provide Filipino tennis fans two opportunities to watch top international players compete on home soil.

“We’re happy to announce and confirm that late last night, we threshed out some details with our franchise holder of the WTA 250. We’re going to have a WTA 250 next year, 2027, in late October or early November,” PHILTA secretary general John Rey Tiangco said.

According to PHILTA, the WTA approved the Philippines’ application to host the additional tournament last week.

The WTA 250 event, expected to form part of the tour’s Asian swing, will mark another significant step in the country’s bid to establish itself as a regular destination for international women’s tennis.

It will follow the Philippine Women’s Open in January, which returns after its inaugural staging earlier this year.

Colombia’s Camila Osorio captured the championship in the inaugural tournament, while Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala reached the quarterfinals before bowing out of contention.

The expansion of the Philippines’ WTA calendar comes amid Eala’s continued rise on the international stage.

Eala recently added an Asian Games bronze medal to her growing list of achievements after losing to China’s Xiyu Wang in the women’s singles semifinals.

With both a WTA 125 and WTA 250 tournament lined up, 2027 is shaping up as a banner year for Philippine tennis, with the country set to host two major stops on the international women’s circuit./PN
