MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas cadets captured the gold medal in men’s basketball of the 29th Southeast Asian Games after decidedly defeating Indonesia 94-55 last night at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Chris Michael Tolomia led the way with 20 points, including five 3-point conversions, for the Filipino team, which recovered from a slow start to help the Philippines bag its 17th SEA Games gold medal.
Kobe Paras chipped in with 14 markers while Raymar Jose and Christian Standhardinger contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, to allow Gilas to sweep all its five matches in the tournament.
Diftha Pratama and Sandy Febiansyakh Kurniawan finished with 10 points apiece to lead the way for Indonesia, which the Philippines beat in the SEA Games gold medal match for the second straight edition.
Gilas jumped to an early lead 9-4 on hits by Von Pessumal and Jeth Troy Rosario. The Indonesians responded with a run to snatch the lead 14-12, but 5 straight points by Kevin Ferrer gave the Philippines a 19-15 lead.
Indonesia was still hanging around 21-17 when Gilas started to pull away on back-to-back triples by Tolomia for a 35-21 lead. Five more points by Tolomia gave the Philippines a 45-27 halftime edge.
The Philippines pulled away for good in the second half on inside conversions by Standhardinger and Rosario, and outside shots by Tolomia to build its largest lead – 39 points – on a triple by Ilonggo Kiefer Ravena.
Meanwhile, Perlas Pilipinas finished its campaign in the women’s basketball with a lopsided 118-44 victory over Vietnam but failed to land a medal finish due to quotient./PN
