ILOILO City – An unidentified number of pirates attacked the 17-crew Vietnam-registered MV Giang Hai at the Taganak anchorage area in Tawi-Tawi province in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
The attack was carried out on Sunday evening, Feb. 19.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Iloilo’s Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica, MV Giang Hai, a cargo ship, was from Suwalesi, Indonesia and was supposed to proceed to Iloilo’s international port in Loboc, Bo. Obrero, Lapuz district to deliver bags of cement.
Six Vietnamese were abducted and one was killed – sailor Vu Duc Hanh.
According to PCG national spokesperson Armand Balilo, the armed pirates could be Abu Sayyaf bandits but there was no confirmation yet as of this writing.
Hot pursuit operations were ongoing, he told Panay News in an interview.
Local fishermen alerted the police about the abduction.
The six abducted Vitnamese were the following:
* Bui Xuan Vien, Master
* Do Huu Nghia, Chief Officer
* Bui Trung Duc, Third Officer
* Nguyen Huu Truong, 2nd Engineer
* Tran Viet Van, sailor
* Nguyen Quang Huy, oiler.
Palabrica said Uni-Ship, Inc. sent a notice that the arrival of MV Giang Hai to Iloilo would be delayed due to the piracy.
The ship’s 10 other crewmen were rescued. They were:
* Hoang Vu Chien, 2nd Officer
* Nguyen Huu Ninh, Chief Engineer
* Nguyen Danh Cuong, 3rd Engineer
* Nguyen Nghiem Huan, 4th Engineer
* Bui Binh Duong, sailor
* Le Huy Hoang, oiler
* Anh Tuan, oiler
* Pham Dinh Phuc, oiler
* Do Huu Phong Nam, chief cook
