ILOILO City – Director General Ronald Dela Rosa of the Philippine National Police (PNP) has put on notice those aiding the New People’s Army (NPA).

“Kakasuhan natin sila kung may ebedensiya tayo against sa kanila,” he declared during a visit here yesterday to check wounded policemen that the rebels ambushed in Maasin, Iloilo on Nov. 24.

Dela Rosa admitted the NPA remains a threat to the peace and security of Western Visayas a day after former Armed Forces chief of staff Eduardo Año bared the government’s goal of wiping out the rebels from Panay Island before the end of 2018.

“Para hindi tayo maisahan dapat ang ating intelligence monitoring ay pagtibayin,” he said.

Two days before the Maasin ambush, the NPA also attacked policemen in Sibalom, Antique.

“I warn those helping and supporting the rebels. They are criminally liable,” said Dela Rosa.

Citing intelligence information, Inspector Clark Philip Dingco, Sibalom police chief, said two days prior to the ambush, several men were seen in the house of a drug suspect.

The ambush wounded four policemen.

Dela Rosa instructed Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) director Cesar Hawthorne Binag to intensify intelligence gathering.

He stressed the importance of “accurate intelligence report para hindi tayo maunahan.”

Dingco declined to name the drug suspect but described this person as a high-value drug target of the police and had a record of arrest.

“Residents told us they saw men hauling bottles of water and rice to the house of this drug suspect,” said Dingco. “Reports reached us, too, that he is coddling an armed group.”

More policemen will be deployed to Panay Island, said Dela Rosa without giving figures.

“Kung babasihan natin ang ginagawa nila ngayon, talagang threat sila,” he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte stopped the peace talks with communist rebels Wednesday last week, citing the non-stop offensives of the NPA.

He also said he would declare the NPA a terrorist group.

“Dagdagan natin ang tao natin dito para sa mga rebelde. Tutukan natin itong problema dito. Ito ang bilin ng ating Pangulong Duterte,” said Dela Rosa.

Dela Rosa visited the wake of Maasin ambush casualty Police Officer 1 Joefel Odon in Cabatuan, Iloilo yesterday.

He also checked the condition of 12 other policemen wounded in the ambush.

On Tuesday, Año, now an undersecretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government, awarded Odon a Philippine National Police Heroism Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal. The slain policeman’s mother Evelyn received them.

Odon also got a posthumous promotion to the rank of Police Officer 2 and his family received P593,000 financial assistance, plus another undisclosed amount from President Duterte’s personal funds.

On the other hand, the 12 wounded policemen – five of whom were still confined at the Iloilo Mission Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo – each received a Philippine National Police Wounded Personnel Medal, cash assistance, new .45 pistols, and mobile phones.

“These policemen risked their lives. They are brave,” said Año.

The cash assistance was from the Office of the President and Police Public Safety Mutual Benefit Association, Inc.

“This is only an initial cash assistance. May darating pa ‘yan para sa pamilya ng ating pulis,” said Año./PN
