MANILA – Pursuant to a directive from President Rodrigo Duterte, all police checkpoints across the metro had been dismantled, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) announced Monday.
As of Sunday midnight all checkpoint personnel have returned to their mother units and will be redeployed to increase visibility in critical areas, the NCRPO director Chief Superintendent Oscar Albayalde said.
Checkpoints may still be set up to support hot pursuit and dragnet operations when needed, Albayalde clarified.
Duterte on Saturday ordered the dismantling of all checkpoints in the country, saying these should be set up only if there was “probability or A1” information that police or military targets would pass through a certain road.
The President said security checkpoints, particularly in Mindanao, were causing travel delays.
“’Pag walang purpose, pangpagulo ng buhay ng Pilipino ’yan (If there’s no purpose, that will only inconvenience Filipinos),” he said.
In September Duterte placed the country under a state of emergency after a bomb blast in Davao City left 14 people dead and scores wounded.
