Police probing woman’s death search for suitor

BACOLOD City – Police were still trying to determine who killed the 26-year-old woman found in a sugarcane field in Hacienda Elena, Barangay Ayungon, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.

Merlyn Villamar, a resident of Barangay Guintorilan, Valladolid town, may have been attacked, investigators said, citing her injury on the head.

Police learned from her elder sister Mae that a suitor was wooing Villamar even though the latter was already engaged to a boyfriend working overseas and set to marry in December.

Investigators were out to search for the suitor.

They were also trying to determine if the victim was sexually assaulted, said Chief Inspector Romeo Vargas, La Carlota police head.

The body, found on Monday, was taken to a mortuary in La Carlota.

Mae said she and Villamar went to La Carlota with friends from Barangay Sibucao, San Enrique town for a drink last Saturday.

Villamar later excused herself, saying she would head home, and boarded her motorcycle, said Mae.

Mae failed to find her sister upon arriving home. She tried calling her but her cellphone number cannot be reached. Mae tried to find her in La Carlota the following day, but to no avail.

Her mobile phone and her motorcycle were nowhere to be found when Villamar’s body was discovered Monday./PN
