Politicians, priests and being gay

THE WEEK has been toxic to say the least. We have presumptuous Vice President Leni Robredo making a fuss about how expensive siling labuyo is, of course blaming President Duterte for it, then wannabe senator and has-been actress Agot Isidro clueless about “a kilo of rice.”

And then there’s that coward Antonio Trillanes IV still hiding in the Senate under the knickers of Senate President Tito Sotto. I’m sure by know it dawned on him that President Rodrigo Duterte has made a fool of him and no amount of press-cons and prayovers will save him.

When he woke up this morning Rodrigo Duterte is still President and he’s still a prisoner in the Senate and scared shit of going out.

Last Friday evening at the necrological service for Panay News founder Danny Fajardo, moi was having a conversation with a colleague and our talks turned to Aries Rufo’s book “Altar of Secrets”, particularly the chapter about naughty gay archbishops molesting naive young seminarians and altar boys.

“There’s nothing wrong with being gay, the problem is if you pretend you’re not.” Indeed, if you choose to have sex with someone who is the same sex as you are, I find nothing wrong with it as long as you both are consenting adults, you do it in the privacy of your bedroom, and you do not do it with animals, minors and children.

Being gay, whether you’re male or female, only becomes an issue when you pretend you’re not, because basically you are lying to yourself. God knows what you’re capable of doing just to keep up the facade.

A case in point is politics; politicians are generally known to suffer from amnesia and they make campaign promises and forget them altogether right after winning the elections.

Take for example former President BS Aquino. When he was campaigning in Cavite he said that “if the MRT line from Cavite to Metro Manila is not done by 2016 he and the Transportation secretary Abaya will have themselves both run over by the train.” His term ended and the much anticipated “magpasagasa ako sa tren” never happened.

Now just imagine a politician who projects the image of a “macho man complete with a wife and children” but is actually a homosexual after sundown; or worse, a “man of God”, a priest who is a closet homosexual or, God forbid, a pedophile.

And the lying game and abuse begins.

Now there are politicians who are gay and make no qualms about it, one can say that they’re gay and proud of it.

Former Albay governor, Cabinet secretary and now congressman Joey Salceda made no issues about being gay and it never affected his career in public service. In fact he is one of a few public servants who really serve the people.

We have Geraldine Roman, newly elected congressman of the 1st District of northern Bataan province who is a transgender. When she was campaigning she presented to the people who and what she is and in fact her advocacy is equal rights for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community.

In Iloilo province we have Mayor “Calay” Alonsabe of the municipality of Alimodian. The good mayor is openly gay and he never made any pretensions. He is not or even tries to hide the fact that he is. He became quite famous for his statement, “Agi takon pero hindi takon makawat” (“I’m gay but I’m not corrupt”). It seems he was describing in opposite a certain city mayor.

It has long been an open secret that former President BS Aquino is a closet gay and if you look at his life closely all the indications are there. The man is pushing 60 and all his life he has been living with his mother till she died. Women seem to run away from him. He is rich, the son of a President and a President himself with fast cars and money yet no woman has ever claimed he impregnated her, and to this day he never married. If he is a closet gay pretending he is not just look at his administration – all lies and half0 truths.

Now wherever you go in “I Am Iloilo City” from coffee shops to barber shops the talks are always there about dismissed mayor Jed Mabilog’s sexual preference. I will not say anything about it; I leave it to my readers. They are discerning enough.

At the end of the day it does not really matter if you’re gay or lesbian, black or white, Christian or Moslem, priest or politician. If you’re an asshole you’re an asshole!/PN
