ILOILO – Gone are the days when fishermen of this agricultural province have to use pressurized paraffin lamp in their fishing expeditions.
The provincial government has started distributing solar-powered lamps to 1,130 fishermen in nine coastal towns.

Taken from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), the solar lamps worth P5.8 million will benefit fishermen victimized by super typhoon “Yolanda” in 2013.

First to get the solar lamps Friday last week were 35 fishermen from Ajuy town. But the bulk of the solar lamps will be given to 635 fishermen from Concepcion town through the One Meal Program of Ilongga civic leader and philanthropist Teresa Chan.

The beneficiaries in Concepcion are from barangays Tambaliza (150), Taloto-an (150), Macatunao (155), Dungon (50), Botlog (50), Baliguian (50), and Salvacion (30).

The supplier of the solar lamps will hold demonstrations on how to install the solar lamps in their fishing boats, according to Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.

“These solar lamps will be very useful to our fishermen. It is cost-efficient compared to petromax and eco-friendly,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.
The other beneficiaries of the solar lamps are from the towns of Anilao (15), Banate (35), Barotac Viejo (30), Batad (40), Carles (100), Estancia (220), and San Dionisio (20).

Their solar lamps will be released and distributed by next week and those who are not included in the first batch may avail of the same on the second.

Defensor said he will purchase more solar lamp sets in the coming months using the remaining P12-million fund from PCSO.
The solar lamp set includes the following:
* two pieces of LED bulbs (6W, 12V), up to 30,000 long life time hours
* one unit solar panel (30W, 12V) with 25 years guaranteed performance
* one battery enclosure including controller (18” steel textured), five meters electrical wiring #16, and three meters electrical wiring #12. (Jezza A. Nepomoceno/PN)
