BACOLOD City – A city councilor requested the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to include the proposed coastal access road in its priority projects in Negros Island Region.
Traffic congestion will continue to exist in major roads, particularly Araneta, San Juan and Lacson and at the downtown area, even with the Bacolod Economic Highway, whose construction is ongoing, Caesar Distrito said.
According to Distrito, roads within the city can no longer accommodate the increasing number of vehicles.
Delivery and cargo trucks going in and out of the ports also contribute to congestion, especially on narrow streets, he added.
“The solution brought up during several consultations and meetings of concerned agencies and city departments is to create a coastal highway that will span barangays Punta Taytay, Sum-ag, Pahanocoy, Tangub, Singcang-Airport, 35, Reclamation Area, 1, 2, 3, and Banago,” Distrito said.
The coastal access road shall provide delivery and cargo trucks and other vehicles heading to and from the ports an alternative route, he said.
Distrito recommended that a “project study” be conducted to determine the viability, cost and impact of the coastal access road to the economy, housing and traffic condition in this capital city.
Earlier, congressmen Alfredo Benitez (Negros Occidental, 3rd District) and Greg Gasataya of this city jointly authored House Bill 5237, which seeks the construction of a coastal road traversing Bacolod, Silay, Talisay, and Victorias cities and EB Magalona town in Negros Occidental./PN
