ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) urged owners of vacant lots in the City Proper to convert these areas into paid parking spaces.
On-road parking has become a common sight and is contributing to traffic congestion, said Councilor Reyland Hervias.
He introduced a resolution in the city council calling on private lot owners in the City Proper to make available their unused spaces for paid parking as a solution to on-road parking.
The SP unanimously approved the resolution.
The City Proper district is predominantly composed of business establishments of which some have limited parking spaces for vehicles owners.
Hervias said all that private lot owners needed to do was to secure a business permit for paid parking spaces from the city government.
“There will be tax incentives to lot owners who will utilize their lots as paid parking spaces,” said Hervias.
Last year, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 proposed the creation of a composite team against on-road parking.
There was also a proposal to deploy barangay captains to carry out policies against road obstructions and illegal parking.
