KALIBO, Aklan – Two hundred fifty personnel from the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) will augment the local police force during the Ati-Atihan Festival.

One hundred of them will be deployed on Jan. 2, according to Superintendent Pedro Enriquez, deputy director of the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO).

The rest of the contingent force will arrive before the festival officially starts.

The “mother of all Philippine festivals” will be held from Jan. 6 to 15.

Aside from them, at least 77 officers from the APPO and municipal police stations will also be deployed to this capital town.

Moreover, personnel of the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion, Army reservists, and Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams were tapped to provide security to the devotees and revelers.

A “final security coordinating conference” will be held this week to fine-tune plans, said Enriquez.

Police assistance centers will be established near festival venues and staging areas and other strategic places.

Composite teams comprising police officers, soldiers, firefighters, and medical responders will be on standby.

Uniformed police officers and soldiers will also intensify round-the-clock security measures to thwart lawless elements.

A traffic rerouting will be carried out, especially on major streets leading to the Pastrana Park and the Magsaysay Park.

Aside from Kalibo, Ati-Atihan is also celebrated in Boracay Island (Jan. 9) and Malinao (Jan. 14) and Makato (Jan. 15) towns, respectively.

Ibajay will hold its Ati Municipal and Devotional Fiesta on the 22nd; Batan, the Ati-Atihan Malakara Festival on the 15th; and Altavas, the Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Festival on the 22nd. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
