MANILA – Is there probable cause to impeach Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno? It’s too early to tell, according to the House of Representatives justice committee.
Apparently, the testimonies given by witnesses during the first four hearings were not enough to determine the viability of the complaint filed by Atty. Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon, according to Rep. Reynaldo Umali, panel chairman.
“[It’s] too soon to weigh in all the testimonies given. There are many other witnesses that we would call in,” Umali said, adding that some high court justices want to appear at the hearings to defend Sereno.
But Umali considered the testimony from Associate Justice Teresita De Castro significant.
Gadon has accused Sereno of culpable violation of the Constitution, corruption, other high crimes, and betrayal of public trust.
The House justice committee will resume its hearings Tuesday next week. Umali expects them to end the hearings on Wednesday./PN
