MANILA — The Philippine volleyball community is mourning the untimely death of Ike Barilea, a rising star from Cadiz City, Negros Occidental who passed away in a motorcycle accident just two days after celebrating his 21st birthday.
Barilea, a member of the Alas Pilipinas men’s national volleyball team, was widely regarded as one of the sport’s most promising young middle blockers. His death was confirmed by the national squad in a heartfelt social media post Tuesday night.
“The court feels emptier, and our hearts heavier. Rest easy, ALAS IKE BARILEA,” Alas Pilipinas Volley said.
“Thank you for the laughter, the memories, and the heart you gave to the team. Heaven gained an angel, but we lost a piece of ours. Fly high, our dear ALAS,” the team added.
Barilea’s athletic journey reflected his steady rise through the country’s volleyball ranks. He powered 1Silay Volleyball Club to a bronze finish in the 2025 U21 National Finals, earning him a call-up to the Alas Pilipinas pool for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
He also played for Cignal in the 2025 AVC Men’s Champions League in Japan and was part of Santa Rosa City’s roster in the 2022 Spikers’ Turf season.
Friends, teammates, and fans flooded social media with tributes, describing Barilea as a cheerful teammate and a disciplined athlete whose humility and passion inspired many.
