BACOLOD City – Parents are urged to have their children administered with an anti-measles vaccine.
The city council last week passed a resolution requesting the City Health Office (CHO) and all barangay officials to encourage parents or guardians in Bacolod to do such.
Author Councilor Ricardo Tan said the resolution was passed in light of the measles outbreaks in different provinces across the country, citing reports from the Department of Health (DOH).
Measles – a highly contagious disease caused by a virus – remains one of the leading causes of death among young children globally despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Tan said the measles cases were traced in Zamboanga City as early as August last year.
He added that according to the DOH, there are at least 166 cases of measles in the country since January this year.
Heath workers must isolate patients with suspected measles from others. While doing this, they must also seek confirmation through appropriate laboratory tests if these patients are really infected with the viral disease, Tan said.
Unvaccinated young children are at highest risk of measles and its complications, including death. Unvaccinated pregnant women are at risk, too.
According to WHO, any non-immune person (who has not been vaccinated or was vaccinated but did not develop immunity) can become infected.
The highly contagious virus is spread by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact or direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions.
The virus remains active and contagious in the air or on infected surfaces for up to two hours. It can be transmitted by an infected person from four days prior to the onset of the rash to four days after the rash erupts./PN
