ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. offered a lot owned by the provincial government in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo for a drug rehabilitation center – should there be a proposal to build one in the province.

The governor was referring to the lot adjacent to the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ).

“Handa ako kun kinahanglan sang Department of Interior and Local Government and Department of Health (DOH) patindugan sang rehabilitation center para sa mga biktima sang ilegal nga druga. Insiga i-donar sang gobyerno probinsyal,” said Defensor.

The governor further said he will open all provincial government-run hospitals to drug dependents seeking rehabilitation.

“Patiha ninyo ako, may kasanag pa ang pangabuhi ninyo,” the governor told IDJ inmates on Sunday. He celebrated his 75th birthday with them.

Many of the IDJ inmates face illegal drug cases.

“I will make a very strong presentation to the DOH kag sugilanonon ko ang aton Sangguniang Panlalawigan kon makapain kami sang espesyal nga budget nga makabulig-bulig sa inyo reporma kag rehabilitasyon,” Defensor told inmates.

IDJ had around a thousand inmates in 2015 but this ballooned to 1,800 this year. According to Senior Inspector Abner Zamora, jail warden, this was due to the antidrug campaign of the Philippine National Police.

“But compared to other jails in the region, ang aton jail congestion is tolerable,” said Zamora.

IDJ was designed to accommodate some 2,000 inmates.

Defensor found the increase in IDJ population disturbing. He urged the inmates to follow dutifully the rules and regulations of the facility because this is part of their rehabilitation process./PN
