MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte will likely to stay in his position amid presidential son and Davao City representative Paolo Duterte’s plan to seek the House of Representatives speakership.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said he believed Duterte will change his stand on the issue despite saying he will resign if Paolo aims for the highest position at the House.
“Di ba sabi ko sa inyo, you make a position, you make a stand on the basis of circumstances. When those circumstances change, you also change your stand. So pwede ring magbago,” Panelo said.
Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go said Duterte being a “man with honor” would make good on his promise to step down if his son runs for House speaker.
“Knowing the President, kilala ko siya for the last 21 years, kung anong binitawan na salita ni Pangulong Duterte ay tutuparin niya iyon,” Go said.
Paolo, who earlier rejected rumors of a possible speakership bid, said on Tuesday he might seek the House leadership due to the ongoing rifts among those who were vying for the coveted seat.
“The House is divided. I might be able to help unite it. Pareho lang kaming binoto ng mga tao ah. Kung term sharing, term sharing na kaming lahat,” said Paolo./PN
