MANILA – Malacañang should disclose President Rodrigo Duterte’s true state of health, according to Sen. Panfilo Lacson.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s five-day absence from the public eye has become a concern.

“The health of the President of any country is not his or his family’s private affair,” said Lacson yesterday.

The public deserves nothing less, he stressed.

“Anyway, (the public) will surely understand that the President is presently exposed to all kinds of stress and physical exhaustion due to the numerous problems besetting the country, not to mention the sight of our soldiers being transported in coffins by military aircraft with all the grieving families waiting to bring them to their respective provinces. That indeed is very stressful,” the former Philippine National Police chief said.

On Monday Duterte skipped the 119th Philippine Independence Day celebration at Luneta Park where he was supposed to lead the flag raising and wreath-laying rites.

Opposition senator Francis Pangilinan urged the President to go public with his medical condition.

“While I accept the explanation of Malacañang that he was tired and needed rest, (his) absence was a concern considering the current situation,” said Pangilinan, also the president of the Liberal Party.

“Having said that, if the President has a medical condition preventing him from fulfilling his duties as commander-in-chief and is not simply just resting, then the public deserves to know the truth,” he added.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, on the other hand, likened the President to a “bull.”

“The President is strong. He is strong as a bull,” Panelo said in a radio interview.

The lawyer maintained that Duterte has no illness.

“Ni wala ngang illness whether serious or slight. Alam po ninyo, si President ay maraming trabaho. Ang dami niyang ginawa the last 26 days kaya halos kulang na tulog niya. Kaya natural lamang na gusto niya ring magpaghinga. But he is working. He is working like hell. He reads a lot,” said Panelo.

To dispel health rumors, Special Assistant to the President Bong Go on Thursday released three photos of Duterte at work. One photo showed the chief executive reading a document, while the other two showed him and Go posing for a photograph./PN
