BACOLOD City – A public utility jeepney (PUJ) driver was struck with a steel pipe and shot several times in Purok Camansi, Barangay Banago.

Efraim Payas, 43, died of multiple gunshot wounds on the head and body.

His attackers, who were on board another PUJ, remain unidentified as of this writing.

Payas, a native of Talisay City, Negros Occidental, was living with his family in Purok Tinagong Paraiso, Barangay Banago, according to Senior Inspector Larry Teovisio, Police Station 3 commander.

Payas was fixing his PUJ around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday when the suspects arrived. He grabbed a stone and threw it at them, police said.

Two of the suspects alighted from their PUJ and hit him with a steel pipe. One of them drew a gun and fired at Payas, investigation showed.

Police were looking at personal grudge as possible motive and fellow PUJ drivers as possible attackers.

Payas’ father-in-law, William Arcenal, identified his body at a local mortuary. A witness identified only as “Junjun” narrated the incident to the police./PN
