Disease downs more than 100T

ILOILO City – Fourteen people have died of rabies in 2017, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA).

Eight of the deaths were from Negros Occidental, three from Capiz, and one each from Aklan, Antique and Iloilo, said DA regional rabies coordinator Pacifico Lumawag.

In 2016 there were only nine human deaths caused by the viral disease.

Moreover, 100,840 people in the region were bitten by rabies-infected dogs, said Caroline Tumabotabo, regional rabies nurse coordinator of the Department of Health (DOH).

In Aklan province there were 7,209 cases; Antique, 5,001; Capiz, 10,759; and Guimaras, 2,422; and Iloilo, 35,753, DOH records showed.

Iloilo City Health Office recorded 1,833 cases; Western Visayas Medical Center, 8,740; Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office, 18,910; Bacolod City Health Office, 8,759; and Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, 1,634.

Most of the bite patients (60,747) were aged 15 years old and up while those below 15 years old numbered 40,093.

Western Visayas residents were encouraged to become responsible pet owners by having their animals checked for rabies, said Lumawag.

“May ari libre nga spay and neuter sang ido, may free vaccination and then may free consultations sa mga nagamalasakit nga ido,” Lumawag said as the DA and the DOH launched the National Rabies Awareness Month on Friday by holding the first Iloilo Kaadlawan sang mga Ido.

The agencies were also campaigning for the control of dog and cat population to minimize the spread of rabies.

Dog population in the region was already more than 490,000 as of last year, DA and DOH data showed.
