Together or sever

WHAT God has joined together let no man separate. – Mark 10:9
During my post-adolescent idealistic phase I have never really believed in annulment or legal separation. I was a firm believer of love against all odds. But as I grew wiser I have come to realize that not all marriages survive on love alone.
As long been discussed in this column, our Family Code provides the grounds for annulment under Article 45 and for Legal Separation under Article 55. In the absence of any of the grounds laid down by our law, a marriage may not be severed by mere agreement or affidavit. The need for court intervention is needed.
Pain of a previous relationship or hurt tends to make us trust less and love less. But it is important to note that even fairytale marriages – remember Brad and Angelina? – end tragically. But for as long as the marriage is founded on love and faith, whatever turmoil shall be a pea-sized concern.
Marriages only end up in the dumps because spouses never take the time to understand the value of faith in their partners, in themselves, in their relationship, and in God.
I know this has been stressed in many weddings: the need to make Christ the center of the marriage.
This begins by going to church or mass as a couple or family, have a quiet family time together or develop the habit of praying together. Remembering that marriage is not only the alignment of the heart but as well as the soul or spirit.
However, there would always be that one out of 100 marriages that perhaps will not workout; not because they lack faith or love but it may be due to something beyond human control.
But don’t be a victim of the it-was-not-meant-to-be syndrome; sometimes it just needs a little push or discernment to understand whether you’ve been put together or you have no choice but be together./PN
