MANILA – Generika Ayala Life Savers recovered from a set down to defeat Cocolife Asset Managers 25-11, 23-25, 16-25, 25-13, 15-9 in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the San Juan Arena.
Darlene Ramdin, import from Trinidad and Tobago, came through with clutch points to lead Life Savers to its first victory on Tuesday night after opening the conference with a loss to Petron Blaze Spikers.
Ramdin finished with 25 points, on 23 attacks and two blocks, while fellow reinforcement Katarina Pilepic of Croatia also contributed 25 markers for the Francis Vicente-mentored squad.
After splitting the first four sets, Life Savers and Asset Managers got into a tight exchange early in the fifth frame, with scores in a deadlock at 8-all following conversions from Pilepic and Ramdin.
Pilepic then unloaded 3 straight points for Life Savers to surge 12-8. After a conversion from Asset Managers, Ramdin came up with back-to-back points to complete the come-from-behind win.
“Everybody is enjoying the game, having fun. Gumaganda ang movement ng team,” said Vicente. “I just told the setter to give it to Darlene and Pilepic. Good thing she delivered.”
Taylor Milton finished with 18 points while Tai Manu-Olevao contributed 15 markers for Asset Managers, which welcomed the un-retirement of veteran setter Tina Salak on a sour note.
Meanwhile, newcomer Iriga City Lady Oragons passed its first major test with flying colors as it survived a gritty Sta. Lucia Realty Lady Realtors 15-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13.
Serbian Tamara Kmezic led the way with 28 points, including 26 kills, while Grethcel Soltones and Japanese Saama Miyagawa chipped in 15 and 10 markers, respectively, for Lady Oragons./PN
