‘Rebel leader’ falls

BACOLOD City – An alleged leader of the New People’s Army was arrested in Barangay Bato, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

Lorenzo Ferolino, who goes by the alias Victor Perolino, faces a string of murder cases.

He was arrested Thursday night in an operation staged by the Sagay City police station and the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo).

The 39-year-old Ferolino is listed as the No. 1 most wanted communist in the watch list of the now defunct Police Regional Office 18, Nocppo said.

He was nabbed while on board a motorcycle in Sitio Linasgasan, Barangay Bato around 10 p.m. on Jan. 3 with a female companion Nocppo identified as 26-year-old Clydie Sabete.

Police recovered from him a 45-caliber pistol, two magazines with 22 live bullets, and a bag containing his voter’s ID and other personal belongings.

Sagay City police head Chief Inspector Antonio Benitez Jr. on Friday said that Ferolino was now in the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

Ferolino faces two counts of murder before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 59 in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental; one count of murder before the RTC Branch 60 in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental; and two counts of murder and one count of frustrated murder before RTC Branch 73 in Sagay City.

No bail bond was recommended for Ferolino’s temporary liberty. (With a report from PNA/PN)
