ILOILO City – A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) leader was arrested in Barangay Mabacan, Calaunan, Laguna.
Winston “Komander Waway” Gilua, 49, was caught around 9:30 p.m. Friday last week on the strength of an arrest warrant for murder that the Regional Trial Court in Antique issued.
The arresting officers were made up of policemen from San Remigio and Laguna.
According to Inspector Efren Espanto, San Remigio police chief, Gilua headed the Panay Regional Party Committee of the NPA, Southern Front Committee.
Gilua was charged for the death of civilian Rofilio Mariano in 1993.
He was also a suspect in the death of the father and brother of San Remigio, Antique mayor Glenn Cabigunda in the 1990s, added Espanto.
Gilua was linked, too, in the 2004 ambush in San Remigio that killed a policeman, a Philippine Army corporal and a civilian.
“After learning that he was accused of murder, he fled. He left his group and went to Laguna where he was able to build a house,” said Espanto.
Gilua did not resist arrest but denied the charge, said Espanto.
Gilua was temporarily detained in Laguna. He was scheduled for transfer to San Remigio this week./PN
