ILOILO City – Its Regional Extension Museum-Gallery along Bonifacio Drive will be turned over to the National Museum next month.
The turnover will be held as part of Semana sang Iloilo – the celebration that marks the establishment of the civil government of Iloilo province – on April 11, said Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.
Lim Construction and Trading was the contractor tasked to rehabilitate and convert the old Iloilo provincial jail into the Regional Extension Museum-Gallery of the National Museum.
The National Museum itself will manage the Regional Extension Museum-Gallery, Defensor said.
Capitol allocated P18 million for Phase 1 of the project, which included the demolition and retrofitting of the original structure.
Phase 2 included the construction of the glass dome and the landscaping. The National Museum allotted P80 million for this.
Defensor had said that the regional museum will be a “show window” for Iloilo and Panay Island.
The Iloilo provincial government also plans to build a park at the front yard of the regional museum.
Developing its front yard would make it more attractive to tourists and locals alike, the governor had said.
The 868-square meter old provincial jail was built in 1911.
It has not been used since 2006 when the inmates were transferred to the new provincial jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan town./PN
