ILOILO — The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 6 launched the 52nd Regional Nutrition Month celebration in the municipality of Leon on July 6, rallying government agencies, local officials, nutrition workers, educators and community stakeholders behind a campaign that links proper nutrition with environmental protection and sustainable food systems.
The regional kickoff underscored the government’s push to strengthen nutrition security by promoting healthier lifestyles alongside environmental conservation, with Leon — known as the “Fruit and Vegetable Garden” of Iloilo Province — serving as the host municipality.
The celebration opened with a symbolic tree-planting activity in Barangay Biri Norte, where participants planted indigenous tree seedlings to emphasize the close relationship between environmental sustainability and improved community nutrition.
Organizers said the activity highlighted the role of healthy ecosystems in ensuring food security and better nutritional outcomes for future generations.
The regional launching program followed at the Leon Covered Gym, drawing representatives from national and local government agencies, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, teachers, students, local partners and community leaders.
Leon was chosen as host because of its strong agricultural identity, with its abundant production of fruits and vegetables reflecting the importance of nutritious food, sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.
This year’s observance carries the theme, “Sa PPAN: Sama-Sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat,” while the 2026 sub-theme is “Nutrisyon at Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan!”
According to the NNC, the themes encourage collective action in building sustainable food systems that protect natural resources while ensuring access to adequate and nutritious food for all.
Throughout July, the council will conduct educational workshops, interactive exhibits and community discussions aimed at increasing public awareness and encouraging greater participation in nutrition and environmental programs./PN
