Rehab ‘graduate’ falls in San Jose drug bust

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – A former Oplan Tokhang surrenderee and graduate of the government’s community-based rehabilitation program was apprehended by authorities on Jan. 18 in an anti-illegal drug operation.

Jonefre Serrano Abella was arrested by police operatives around 1 p.m. on Jan. 18, beside Delegate Angel Salazar Jr. Memorial School in Barangay 8. The suspect allegedly sold a sachet of suspected shabu to a police undercover agent, in exchange for P1,000 in buy-bust money. Another six sachets of suspected shabu were seized from Abella’s possession.

Abella himself admitted that he had previously completed the eight-week intensive phase of the government’s community-based rehabilitation program – dubbed as “Journey to Rebirth, Dalan sa Pagbag-o” – on February 2018 in here.

Abella was reportedly in the area as he accompanied his child to the school.

Aside from the illegal drugs and buy-bust money, police also recovered from the suspect P2,606 in cash and four live ammunitions for a caliber .45 firearm. The bullets were found inside the toolbox of the suspect’s motorcycle.

Abella defended himself that the ammunition were merely for “anting-anting” to ward off evil spirits that may harm him and he had no intention of using them

The suspect face scharges for violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002; and Republic Act 8294, or the law governing Illegal Possession of Firearms – as well as COMELEC Resolution No. 10464./PN
